What is worse than finding a worm in your apple?

What is safe? Pesticides or not? a reply on an article on safety of pesticides in food where "pesticides can be considered 'as safe as ever' see "Rethinking the tools we use in the battle against pests in southern New Jersey The organic movement has increased awareness of local farmers' use of insecticides on their crops" http://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/life/rethinking-the-tools-we-use-in-the-battle-against-pests/article_9f10c6df-ca49-59fd-817c-60f3240de628.html?goback=%2Egde_3846273_member_123764329 the quote "From his own perspective, modern practices allow farmers to minimize any residues on produce they sell. For him, organics may be better for the environment overall, but both organic and conventional produce are equally safe to eat." is a bit ironic. Who is it protecting? The environment, humans or industry? 1. for the environment: the article already states that 'organic is better for the environment'. 2. for the public health perspective, NO pesticides will have to be our final aim. In the end, the 'what is worse than finding a worm in your apple' may have as an answer 'insecticides in you mouth/system' - even with all the protection and regulations not all farmers will ever adhere to them and this will give our Epidemic Intelligence Service and toxicologists its clusters; we need to address minimum risk for anyone in the population. 3. finally, from the buyers and economic perspectives: if a parent is worried about pesticides and wants to buy organic this should, be encouraged - we know that it is finally the pressure of the individual buyer and policy that will change the direction of the market.
